Day 25: Rainy Day with the Family

Today we could not go to the Book Barn as planned. It was pouring rain.  We hung out at the house, I searched for the missing smashed penny. The one from the Pony Express museum.  It did not show up yet.
Lon curled up with the I-pad. He was sad he could not go out and play at the book barn.  The I-pad was helping him get over it
Teaching Daddy how to play Angry Birds.
Petting Max, or is it Bruiser, at cousin Laura's home. We had a very nice visit with her.
Waiting for his dinner at Harry's place in Colchester

A history bit about Harry's:
Harry's Place was opened by Harry Shmuckler of Salem in 1920 near the Colchester town green, and was moved twice before settling into its current location on Broadway. Athough its second owner, Ruby Cohen is best remembered as "Harry". Ruby owned the business for over forty years, having worked for Harry as a teenager and buying the hot dog stand in the 30's. Ruby was a State Representative and was "credited" with blocking route 2 from being built until the early seventies. Ruby sold the business in 1978 to John Garet and Harry's is still owned and operated by the Garet Family. Siblings John Garet and Suzanne Caruso still operate the "Stand" in a manner which brings customers back to times gone bye.
Today, Harry's Place maintains its family atmos-phere by feeding and employing generations of families. It is common to see mutiple family members working and Harry's has even employed all 12 siblings from a local family. The business is listed on both the state and national historic register. Although Harry's is still a seasonal drive-in, our season has expanded its original Memorial through Labor Day season. Weather permitting, the business opens in mid March, and typically closes after Halloween. On a typical day at Harry's it is common to see to see families, businessmen, bikers, and teenagers standing in line waiting with people who have enjoyed our food for decades. People watching is a much enjoyed pastime of many customers, and often our benches in front of the stand are the most popular.

Enjoying his chicken strip dinner.
I had a burger, Mark had clams and Grammalyn had a burger too. It was wonderful.
Uncle Jeff came over for a visit, Daddy and Uncle Jeff were just talking. Lon was tired when we got home from dinner, so he went downstairs and is watching something on the I-pad.
Tomorrow, New Hampshire!
