We saw this lovely lady as we first walked in. A question formed in Mark's mind that would bug him all day. Yet, he could not go up and ask them. I eventually did that for him. Yes, they do use the Port-a-Potties in the hoop skirts, They prefer the handicapped ones, as they are wider. They back into the facility. They wear split drawers so it is simple at that point. Now, you have more information that you ever wanted to know. For more general knowledge go here: http://www.wcwa.net
Calvary. The colt is being led around the field to teach him that the noise is nothing to be scared of. He does not seem scared as he is eating a bit of grass.
The Confederates advance! They had representatives from Virgina, Alabama and South Carolina. I knew the Alabama flag (mainly white), the South Carolina flag with the palmetto in green on a white field. A lady next to me asked what the tree was for and I told her it was for South Carolina and they still have a palmetto tree on the state flag today. She said it was still weird.
Lon watches the battle unfold from a great vantage point. I looked at the crowd, if this was back east, the crowd would have been overwhelming, I am sure. This was very much more to Mark's liking!
Some of the ladies placed a cross and a wreath on the field for ALL the war dead. The bugler played Taps. It was very nice
Now for some movies!
President Lincoln was walking through the grounds. He shook Lon's hand and called him a good Lad. Thank you, Mr. President
Lunch Time! We brought a picnic lunch. Mark was sad he brought lunch, they were selling roasted turkey legs. He was torn, but he ate the food we brought with us. I think he should have had the turkey leg!
The colt is deeply asleep. She even was doing a little running in her sleep. I told Lon she was alot like him, moving in her sleep!
The telegraph wagon. It had a message coming in. Did you know you can go on the internet and send telegraph messages?
That was the end of our day in Plain, watching the Civil War battle. We keep passing something called the Iron Goat Interpretive Center. This time we stopped. It is a rails to trails trail head. There are lots of trails starting out from here. The history was given on a series of posters. It was fascinating. I took pictures of all of them so I could read it all later!
A pit stop in Index and we were on our way home. It was a wonderful day. The weather could not have been better, it was alot of fun. I will be looking to see if there are any more reenactments coming up in the spring! This was the last one for the year. Snow is forecast for Tuesday night in Leavenworth. Not sticking or staying, but snow is coming.
