Lunch at the Inn at Kelly's Ford

Kelly's ford is up in Culpepper County. We went up on Route 17 to SummerDuck Road. Isn't that a great name? SummerDuck Road? There was a Civil War Battle at Kelly's Ford. March 17, 1863. It was inconclusive. This is the area of Chancelorsville, The Wilderness, Spotsylvania, and, of course, Fredericksburg.
We had lunch in Pelham's Pub. Pelham was a real person, he was known as Gallant Pelham. He was confederate. I am still learning all the history of the area. I am telling Lon about it too!
The Inn is beautiful. The grounds are amazing!
The food was good. My mother is still talking about the duck. The seared pineapple with rum sauce and vanilla ice cream was wonderful. I always remember dessert. Lon loved the fries! They were good. Crispy outside, soft inside and perfectly spiced. After lunch we went out on the grounds, showed Lon the horses.
After lunch we asked the lady at the desk upstairs if there was a road that connected to route 3. It would be nice to see some more of the area instead of just backtracking. She said, sure! But in some places it is only a one lane road, and there is a one lane bridge. I wrote down what she said. I am so glad we had the street pilot!! The directions were correct, as far as they went, but the road was only one lane and parts of it were not even paved. I had not seen a buzzard up close before and, we came across them visiting with a sleeping possum. I took some pictures. Okay, so that was a bit odd. They are certainly not the most attractive birds around!

The road was pretty. It did not seem like less than an hour away was a major interstate. These were the only buzzards we saw. Which was nice. We passed through Eleys Ford. The Baptist church there was pretty. The windows are great. I am trying to find out more about this pretty little country church. The road we were on did eventually connect with route 3. Near the Chanecellorsville Battle field. We drove up to the visitor's center. Lon and I had been there on our last trip. We were going to get out and walk around, take a picture of Daddy and Lon at the same spot, but Lon was sound asleep and had been for a good part of the country road.
After we made a quick stop at the grocery store, we, of course, stopped again at Carl's. Can't get enough of Carl's!

At the grocery store we got some fresh local corn. NICE. Lon had a marvelous time with the corn! He even ate some corn right off the cob! What a guy at only one!

This is the end of a long day! It was a good day! We all had fun and will remember that country road. If it was not for the street pilot I am sure we would have thought we were really hopelessly lost.

The next blog:
The Fourth of July! A small town celebration!
