Bentos

Last night, since I was so caught up in the new computer and forgot to make dinner, we went out to Bentos. A little Japanese place near here.  Lon has always gotten the fried fish.  Lon may have been the only one who got fish sticks. They no longer carried it on the menu. Lon said the chicken katsu would be okay.  He ate the entire chicken piece and tried the katsu sauce. I was so impressed with him trying new things again! It was only a short phase where he would not try anything else!

Hi Susan,
I'm looking forward to see new pictures soon.
Chicken katsu is one of our favorite family menu at home.

Dear Susan, Mark and Lon,

A happy, healthy 2011 to you all, and one that will be loaded with exciting ideas and fruitful actions as well!

Hope the holiday season in 2010 has brought the entire family tons of joy and inspirations. It was such a pleasure, as always, to read your Christmas letter, getting to stay updated on everyone’s reflections, progress and growth.

As with last year, I have been away in Taiwan, Hong Kong and Mainland China since the end of December. I had piles of schoolwork to do, and decided to bring my laptop along for the first time over my international trips ever. As uncertain as I was at first about the safety issue that would be involved, the advantage of having one handy turned out to outweigh the responsibility of having to keep an eye on it all the time. I would just have to be more strategic next time on where to get more powerful WiFi connections (hotels and pubic “hotspots” for example) so as to access the Internet in a less cumbersome way than over this current trip.

On the home front I was lucky enough to have Jeff to trust my entire house to while no one was in there. (My sister had taken my mother to LA so that she would not be left alone in the New England winter.) Jeff has since shoveled the snow, herded the two cats, reported back to late-night security calls, and fixed ongoing house problems. He told me that the blizzards that have attacked SE Connecticut have been pretty severe this year. Since I had left as early as the morning of Christmas Eve (so as to accept the only affordable fare for this multi-legged trip), all the dirty work has been left to the capable hands of this poor friend of ours!

The place in China that I stayed last week in belongs to my dad’s relatives. Geographically it is not far from Hefei, Anhui, the town where Mark worked as a consultant years ago, if my memory should serve me right. With the highways and high-speed railway systems blossoming everywhere in this country, places that it used to 5-6 hours to get to will be accessible within a couple of hours very soon.

As for what advice I have for your friend moving to Beijing for a prospective three years, suggest to her that she learn the local language so that she will have something to pride herself on down the road!

Wishing you all the grace of the beginning of a new year! Hope I will get to see you as usual if you have any plans to come to the East Coast later this year!

Most warmly,
Tek
