Last Day of School and a Trip to Lake Chelan!

Today was Lon's last day at Juanita Elementary as a second grader!  He will be in third grade next year. I can not believe how fast the time has flown by!
There was a moving up assembly at school and a big  good bye to the fifth graders moving on to middle school.
Then we all piled in Rochelle's car for a little get away to Lake Chelan.  SO very fun. Lon is the only boy.  He is loving it.
We stopped at this rest stop on our epic road trip last summer. Except it was pouring rain when we stopped.
All the kids!
Eastern Washington
The view of Lake Chelan from our hotel room.

Cub Scout Graduation

Tonight was Lon's last cub scout pack meeting of the year. This is the super fun meeting/potluck picnic in the park. Lon has completed all the requirements of his Wolf status and is moving up to Bear rank.
The weather was not wonderful. A bit overcast and dark, but it did not rain. Lon is enjoying his hot dog and watermelon.  I brought 4 dozen cupcakes, and as we left there were only about 1/2 a dozen left (8). I think they were a hit
Mt Rainer trying to peek out.
Assembling for the ceremony.
Lon volunteering his neckerchief. It would be soaked in special water from a special Boy Scout camp and set ablaze. If it burned but did not scorch, Lon and the rest of his den, worked hard and had a good time and they would all move up.
None of them were nervous about it.
Firing it up. Yes, it burned but did not scorch. It was very fun. (they soaked it in rubbing alcohol) The pictures of the fire did not come out well.
Lon moved up to Bear.
He got to play in the park and had a great time
OO Denny Park is a lot of fun. We should come back to this park!

Bike Safety at Juanita Market

After school was over for the day, we loaded up the car with Lon's old bike and his scooter. He wore his helmet too. Good thing the first thing we see when coming into the Juanita Beach Market is a cop giving a ticket to a couple who did not wear a helmet while riding their motorcycle.
Riding in.
After we donated Lon's bike, they would fix up the brakes and give it to someone who needed a bike. It was a win win for us ! Lon has out grown the bike, and he will be getting a new one soon. He loves riding his scooter!
We saw a booth to get a new helmet, with someone who would fit him properly.  This was good. It was a multi sport helmet. Not just bike, but scooters and skates too. I think this one will actually protect his head. The old one I was getting nervous about.
Looking at all the cool stuff in an ambulance
Inside the fire truck, too.  It will always be cool to look inside the fire truck.
The Juanita Beach Market Bees.  They are adorable.
Then he got to go inside the police car. At least he got into the front seat!
We did walk around and look at all the great booths. They had a volksmarch booth. They had a course set up for kids to walk, at the end they got prizes. Lon, of course, did that. One of the prizes was a pin.  We looked all around and this time we got a re useable Juanita Market bag.

Toy Maker, Balance and Motion

This morning we had a visit from the Toy Maker. It was an in school field trip, with the entire second grade participating.
Getting directions for the first phase of the project
Working hard on getting that ruler sawed in half. The little saw blades were not very sharp, but after some elbow grease, it worked
Adding some color to the stand he built. Why were we building a stand? we would find out soon enough
Working hard
Walking around with his tiny man balanced on top. Yep, Lon made a clothes pin tiny man with a washer counter weight for his colorful stand.  He had a great tiny man. He called it his tiny man circus.
Coloring his tiny man some more, he forgot to put pants on him.
Phase three instructions. What were we going to learn? We had our balance portion, so this must be instructions on what to do for motion. The kids each would have a small washer, a couple nails, a spool, a half straw and a rubber band.
Mr. Toymaker showing how it works and what you can do with it. Energy stored, then used up as kinetic energy.
Making his own spool motion machine
Lon had a great time at the in school field trip.
Mommy could not stay and give any AR tests today. She had a volunteer thank you luncheon. Good thing Mommy went, she won a gift certificate for free pizza at MOD pizza!

All School Concert

Tonight was a new event for this school year! An all school concert. The kids went up by grade and sang two songs each. They were SO cute.

All the first graders sang together. They sang a Japanese folk song called Sakura. It was very nice, they had children playing cymbals and various drums. They did a great job
He was really singing, I could hear him!  It was great

A wider shot of the class
The second song they sang was called A Lady from Santa Fe. About a lady who takes her children to town and they cry for chocolate and lemonade, but she does not give it to them, so they cry themselves to sleep
After it was over, Lon and the Curry Girls went for ice cream at Dairy Queen!

Cute kids!

Field Day, 2013

Wednesday was Field Day at School. A fun morning of games and prizes for the kids. They did not get prizes for winning the games, but prizes for completing as many games as they could. There were duck races, a tattoo station, a bubble station, rope swing, climbing rope, all sorts of great things. It was a wonderfully beautiful day for it. I was assigned to be the adult at the Prize Walk. A cake walk event but not cakes or cookies involved. I had to be there the entire morning.

Walking the walk. Lon still loves this game.
Lon won his round. The kids were not supposed to be able to go again. One prize per round. Toward the end since I was monitoring the giving out of prizes, we were able to let kids go again and most kids were able to get a little prize.  Not everyone won, but more won than did not.
At the end of the games, everyone gathered on the lower field, first the 5th grade classes divided up and had a tug of war. The winner of that challenged the teachers and other adults. The 5th graders went down fairly quickly.
Lon had a blast, he won prizes, he played with his friends, it was a great day!

Olympic National Park

Lon and I skipped school today to get the Jr. Ranger Badge from Olympic National Park.
The garmin had so much trouble finding the right way to go, we ended up not using it.  We got on the ferry in Edmonds. We could not have planned it better. We pulled up to the ticket window, he told us line 1. I thought  we were going to have to wait. Nope. We got right on the ferry! Pretty fun
Going over the Hood Canal Bridge. It looks so different than I remember it. We passed Chimicum and I thought of Bullwinkle. He was from there.
Playing with the animal skulls. Lon got his booklet, and the Ranger told us that he had to do his five parts, watch the movie instead of a Ranger talk, since they did not have those yet. He also had to go up and do a small hike at Hurricane Ridge. That works for us.
Black Bear Skull
The wolf skull. We learned that the wolf is extinct on the Olympic Peninsula.
We watched the 25 minute movie, looked at a few more exhibits, then he did his five required elements in his booklet.
He used this booth to tell me what he learned. They even had puppets
Going up, up, up!!
All the way up to Hurricane Ridge.  It was COLD up there, about 38 degrees. The wind was blowing too. Brrrrr
It was beautiful. Almost no one else there.
Learning more about the animals that live up there
Both Lon and I were very thirsty. We could have bought a bottle of water for almost as much as the refillable container. The container had the Hurricane Ridge Logo on it.  Since we could fill it up there, we did that. Lon had fun doing that.
Time to go out and play in the snow. Okay, Lon played in the snow piles, I just took pictures of it all.
King of the snow pile!
A pretty shot. We were getting really really cold. We did not dress for Hurricane Ridge.
Critters. There are two of them, and I think they are marmots. They were small, brown and fuzzy and this picture is not a good one, but it was the best I could get from so far away.
Lon saw a deer on the way to the park, I saw a deer on the drive down from Hurricane Ridge and then when we were out of the park we saw three deer on the road side.
It was a FUN drive down the ridge. I went slow, and told Lon we were looking for more critters.
This was a different Ranger from when Lon got his booklet.  He told us that we had to do everything in the book since we did not get a ranger talk. Um, no. Lon calmly told him that was not the deal. He said, well if that was what you were told. Thank you.  There was a section called Hiking Bingo, that was one of the ones we gave a pass, there were 9 activities in the book, Lon did 7. (More than required by his age) Hiking Bingo was not going to happen, not at Hurricane Ridge, there was too much snow!  Lon had a great time out there. He saw a lot of things he would like to see more of when we have more time. We only had a little while out there.  We will have to go back, soon.
